Your Open Pantry (colloquially Open Pantry, the OP, or just OP) was a place. It existed about two blocks from Austen’s mother’s house in Madison. It was a convenience store offering mass marketed goods at a slightly raised price. The OP used to be a favorite destination for Austen and Evan, especially during the summer when it was hot and drinks were needed. Austen and Evan would often use going to the OP as an excuse to hang out, go for a walk, or talk about stuff. Evan and Austen used to refer to the 40 oz. sodas as “40 oz. to freedom,” which is a joke about the band Sublime. Around the second year of OP visits, Evan and Austen began asking if the other wanted to go to the OP with very vague requests, such as “Hey, wanna go down to Crub Town and pick up a couple squids?” or “Wanna go pop the top off of a cold one?” This also lead to the development of calling the meeting place between Evan and Austen’s houses things like “the Troll Cave” or “Grubb’s Tavern,” or “The Spot.” One summer there was this really sick deal where you could buy a 40 oz. fountain soda and a candy bar for like $1.50. Alas, all good things must pass, and the following summers the deals got lamer and lamer until the OP itself turned into a 7-11, the lamest of all convenience stores. A common OP practice was placing a “Dunk Em” (one of those shitty snack-pack things with little bread sticks and shitty dipping cheese) in your soda, paying for the soda, and getting the dunk em for free. The point of that practice was definitely humor, because “Dunk Em“‘s suck a ton. The OP sold donuts but there is absolutely no reason to buy them because there were (and are) much better donuts down the street at Greenbush Bakery. One day, Austen waited to pay for his things behind Evan, and then walked out of the store forgetting to pay. There were no consequences for this accidental theft. This was how Austen and Evan discovered that you could very easily “glitch” things out of the Open Pantry. Once, Austen bought an orange juice, drank it in the store, put the empty bottle back on the shelf, took a full one, and left. It was an extremely common practice to spend up to 20 minutes in the OP trying to decide what to get.

What is Situationist?

Situationist is an iPhone app that makes your everyday life more thrilling and unpredictable.

Why is it called Situationist?

Short answer: it is inspired by the Situationist International, a radical movement that sought to transform everyday life and the world through experimental forms of behaviour.

It alerts members to each other’s proximity and gets them to interact in random “situations”. These situations vary from the friendly “Hug me for 5 seconds exactly” or “Compliment me on my haircut”, to the subversive eg “Help me rouse everyone around us into revolutionary fervour and storm the nearest TV station”.

Members simply upload their photo and pick the situations they want to happen to them from a shortlist, in the knowledge that they might then occur anywhere, and at any time.

Only when the army has withdrawn do the students realize how long it has been since they saw the austere professor with the clipped tone. The young man who once led an exodus from her classroom now leads a delegation in search of her. They find her in her office, hysterically sweeping books off the shelves into the middle of the floor.

“Teach, really, it’s OK,” soothes the young rebel. ”There’ll still be a place for you. We still want you to share the things you know—You’ll just have to get used to treating us as equals.”

But the professor is inconsolable. ”You idiots! Why didn’t you burn it all down?” She sobs.

“What? Burn what down? We’re not—”

“Everything! The classrooms, the bookstore, the cafeteria, the whole prison complex where I’ve wasted my miserable life! What a horrible farce! Can’t you see that your children are going to end up here, learning your protocol and reading the same old histories through your new lens? They’ll sit in circles, being equals, counting the minutes to lunch! How dare you—how dare you!”
